MIKO MAL – ERLING HAALAND (ELET ADAB)
For the last few years, every ‘song of the year’ conversation has had Babyface Mal‘s name in the mix. Now, under his new alias Miko Mal, the Melbourne rapper offers ‘Erling Haaland (Elet Adab)’ as the latest contender. Through bilingual bars and his addictive style, Mal continues his run this year following ‘Tramp‘ featuring Nerve and ‘In Heaven’s Name‘. In the music video shot by Tommy Film, it’s clear that Mal is Melbourne, and a confirmed staple in the rap scene who continues to stamp his authority on each track. Each release becomes his new best, and nowadays when he drops, the people listen and respond, so expect this to be everywhere.
JAAL – NOIR FT. D3JA & C000KIE
Jaal invites D3JA and c000kie on ‘NOIR’, one of the steeziest collaborations this year. On the potent production of OGK and gtai, D3JA slides through with the warm welcome before Jaal’s pre-chorus and c000kie’s laidback yet nevertheless confident chorus. Proven once more on his latest release, there’s never a dull moment when it comes to the Southeast Melbourne rapper’s effortless style and flow. The music video is filmed, edited, and directed by Dylan Guy, who captures the trio cruising through the night in the convenience store visuals. Following ‘AIN’T NO WAY’ as his second single from the upcoming project, Jaal hosts the feature artists for their first appearance in 2023. Hopefully it won’t be their last.
JESSB – RING RING FT. GOLD FANG
JessB and Gold Fang are the Afro Fusion duo we didn’t realise we needed until now. Having just come off tour together, Aotearoa/New Zealand artist JessB presents ‘Ring Ring’ featuring Eora/Sydney’s Gold Fang. Not only do their voices work in tandem, but the accompanying visualiser directed by Jasper Karolewski, is an extension of their high energy chemistry. The song captures the essence of a lively and lustrous pursuit of an individual, as it unfolds through the reciprocal act of answering a phone call. Balancing other callers adds to the excitement, but the special individual is too significant to bother entertaining others. Mixing afro-inspired diasporic sounds, backed by driving grooves of Dancehall, ‘Ring Ring’ creates an insatiable appetite that’ll have you coming back for more.
STEEZ MALASE – PLAN A
Reinforcing his name through his unique style, Steez Malase brings his lyrical prowess to the forefront with latest single ‘Plan A’. Shot and edited on an iPhone by Steez himself, the grayscale music video depicts him alone in his apartment, contemplative about his sole pursuit – Plan A. Originally from South Auckland, the earnest storyteller recounts his progression across borders driven by the need to enhance circumstances through his distinctive way of doing things. Amidst unwavering dedication to his craft, he’s resolute in amassing wealth and overcoming obstacles as he’s been set on achieving greatness since an early age. Following the smoothness of ‘Run The Cheque’, the latest from the Boorloo/Perth based artist sees him destined to achieve success one way, the only way, Plan A.
DANI PADRÓN – HYPNOTIC FT. DOUBLE O SMOOVE
Colombian born Dani Padrón delivers new track ‘HYPNOTIC’ alongside Double O Smoove. The Latin singers’ fifth release of 2023 unites her raspy melodies with Smoove’s signature suave raps. Produced by their frequent collaborator kb808, this tale of love and desire transcends language, switching between lyrics in Spanish and English. Atop rooftops and backdropped by graffiti walls, the music video adds to the song’s fiery passion with Christian Guasca capturing the Naarm/Melbourne artists performing the track to each other. Padrón’s explosive last eight months will culminate into her first full-length album titled No Fear.
ZOO JAMES – ONLY ONE
One of the most vocally gifted artists’ from Melbourne’s north, Zoo James, offers up pop rap cut ‘Only One’. Following ‘Ride or Die’ and ‘Broken Promises‘ from earlier this year, Zoo demonstrates his skilled penmanship and storytelling on the latest love ballad. For fans of Dominic Fike or Post Malone‘s latest album AUSTIN, ‘Only One’ is accompanied with a music video shot and edited by Kidd Suave. The visuals are shot in a field, with the hues of colour varying as Zoo performs his third release of 2023. It works well as it’s straight to the point —just like this track, and just like Zoo.
