KOTE$ – IF THE DEVIL KNOCKS.
Kote$ contemplates his sins on latest single ‘IF THE DEVIL KNOCKS.’ The Gold Coast rapper delivers an eerie and entrancing confessional following his recent releases with C Chef and AUD’$ 2023 Project of The Year winners’ COLOURDNOYZ. While ‘ITDK’ is a slower-paced solo track than his previous offerings, Kote$ remains fastly focused on his “mission for these bands”: “Kote$ bout his cheddar, you can tell by the lettering.” The single premiered on YouTube alongside an accompanying minimalistic music video filmed by Liam Hantos. The 42 rapper’s rise has been largely attributed to his love for collaboration but ‘ITDK’ well and truly proves Kote$ can holds his own on hits.
KHI’LEB, CREED THA KID & AMAR. – MARGARET
Khi’leb proclaims “it’s the new era” on ‘MARGARET’, the first single of 2024 from the Ghanaian Australian artist, Creed Tha Kid and AMAR. Produced by 2key, the jazzy hip-hop joint connects the three Meanjin/Brisbane close collaborators on their first release together (if only AMAR. was on ‘Cheques’). The visuals directed and edited by Caio Goncalves Bindi take us from the studio to the streets through colour and B&W fish-eye lenses. Even though the chemistry between the trio can be seen in the music video, it can also be felt in each rapper’s verse as they push themselves for their best bars.
A.GIRL – RECOGNISE
After linking with HP ONIT on ‘Daisy’, A.GIRL snuck in a solo single before the end of 2023. Produced by Lucy Blomkamp, the Eora/Sydney artist catches her partners’ loyalty wavering on the R&B cut ‘Recognise’. Dressed head to toe in Effn Clothing, A.GIRL keeps a close eye on her partner’s every move in the Slippn-directed music video. Following her previous solo effort and arguably best track to date, ‘Do It Again’ in 2022, last year proved to be a quiet release period for A.GIRL. Nevertheless, the anticipation for new music never diminishes.
ELIJAH YO – OUTSIDE FT. MRVZ & BIGGS 685
Elijah Yo enlists MRVZ and BIGGs 685 to soundtrack another summer in Western Sydney. On ‘Outside’, Elijah sends love to every corner of the map and reflects on his return to the scene over the West Coast inspired instrumental by BeatsByTui. The Area’s go-to melody maker MRVZ offers his warm vocals while BIGGs graces another Elijah Yo track with his effortless delivery. In the music video by Katashi Films, they spend the day driving around before arriving at a cook-out hosted by the 685 OG himself. ‘Outside’ welcomes the new year with nothing but good vibes.
MOSES & TAKTIX – NEXT UP? AUSTRALIA [S1.E.1]
New Wave members Moses and TAKTiX debut Mixtape Madness’ new series ‘Next Up? Australia’. The London-based hip-hop music outlet has previously hosted their ‘Next Up?’ series’ in the UK, France, Germany, and Scandinavia. Now landing Down Under to highlight our local talent, the Melbourne rap duo kick it off with a freestyle equipped with a beatswitch, back-and-forth raps, and shoutouts to a bunch of their peers. Filmed by Guy Vears, the visuals find the Cranbourne emcees posted across the bay from the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Hopefully in future episodes Mixtape Madness will venture to more Australian cities.
JALMAR – FERRARI MODE
(Garden of Beats & Ruben Majok)
Chilean-Australian artist Jalmar shares a birthday drop including visuals and new track ‘Ferrari Mode’. Following solo tracks like ‘Led Zepplin’ or his feature on Cherry Chola’s ‘mini chor’, the 2-minute song, produced by Kaiso and Prodbyfrank, marks his first release of the Kobe year and continues his hot streak of Latin rap singles. Shot by Garden of Beats and Ruben Majok, the music video captures him amidst greenery as he delivers his freestyle in his usual steezy and bilingual style. Jalmar has earned his place as a mainstay in Australia’s Latin music scene since his 2021 debut.
