SHABA – 4K TO THE MIDDLE EAST FT. UZI
Shaba and UZI declare Free Iran as they unite on ‘4K To The Middle East’. For his first release since 2021, the Meanjin/Brisbane artist dedicates the track “to [their] family, the people of Iran and to the producer of this song, Mudyflame, whose brother who was killed in the ongoing protests.” Bending their relentless flow over the drill production, Shaba and UZI trade bilingual bars throughout the song. With drone shots of bikers driving across sand dunes and Shaba rapping out the side of a helicopter, the accompanying music video by Moonboy Studios is a spectacle in its own rights.
GLO – CERTIFIED FREAK
Eora/Sydney-based GLO returns from a two-year hiatus with new single ‘Certified Freak’. As an introduction her ‘Grown’ era, the alternative R&B/neo soul artist explores what it means to be expressive and unapologetic in her sex appeal. There are hints of Ari Lennox and Snoh Aalegra in the magnetic GLO vocals, sitting amongst the synth basslines of long-time collaborator Scruffs. Showcasing her talents in dance and movement, GLO works with choreographer and videographer Cassandra Merwood to convey an eye-catching visual of silhouettes and sensuality.
BABYFACE MAL – BUBBLIN UP (GET FIZZY)
Babyface Mal continues to show his range alongside his consistency with his first solo single of the year ‘Bubbling Up (Get Fizzy)’. The quality of music being produced from the Naarm/Melbourne local seems to be increasing with each drop, and it’s hard to pick a favourite from any of his recents. From the visuals directed by Josh Davis, to the neon, space-themed cover art, the Sid Mallick-produced track takes inspiration from Lil Uzi Vert‘s ‘Just Wanna Rock’. Following his verse on JAY1‘s Australian remix of ‘Loose’ alongside Day1, Mal delivers as usual and hints that 2023 will be even bigger than the last 12 months.
MALI JO$E – NEVA THAT FT. KOBIE DEE
Here’s one for the hip-hop heads. Boorloo/Perth’s Mali Jo$e and Sydney artist Kobie Dee join forces as two of the best spitters in the country. Produced by JCAL, the pair’s effortless steez compliment each other nicely with every line on ‘NEVA THAT’ landing as a quotable. The music video by JustPlay Media does what this track needed: living by the manta of less is more. No gimmicks, the full focus is on the bars. This east to west connect should put the whole country on notice.
REYANNA MARIA – IMAGINE
Sydney’s Reyanna Maria returns with a new pop/R&B single and music video. Produced by Sam Varghese Abraham and Liam Thomas, ‘Imagine’ is a catchy and light-hearted track that the Filipino-Australian artist describes as “a cute and fun one for you and your best friends.” In her music video debut directed by Gene Alberts, she performs the track alongside friends – “doing shit you’ve just imagined” as the lyrics suggest. Following her 2022 release ‘Never Miss A Beat’ alongside Mason Dane, A.Girl and Day1, Reyanna Maria reaffirms her solo star presence for the new year.
BC TOMMY – 18 FT. STT LAURENTT
Two of Melbourne’s rising melodic rap talents in BC Tommy and Stt Laurentt link up to pour their hearts out on autotuned cut ’18’. Exploring themes of pain, failed romances, and substance abuse, the pair combine with noticeable ease and vibrant chemistry, showcasing strong vibrato vocals and angsty lyricism. Shot by in-demand videographer NBreezy, late-night city drives and a bougie penthouse are the backdrops for a clip sure to be enjoyed by fans of Juice WRLD and Trippie Redd.
