NERVE & YXNG DAVE – RUN & GUN
(MovieMakingMitch)

Taking his ‘Walk & Talk’ series to another level, Meanjin/Brisbane’s Nerve taps Yxng Dave for ‘RUN & GUN’. Their collaboration arrives after the UK rapper featured in Nerve’s popular ‘LUCKY DIP’ sample flipping series earlier this year. Yxng Dave, fresh off his debut project FAMOSO, brings a cool and calm vocal tone to compliment the back-and-forth with Australia’s favourite triple threat – always writing, producing, and mixing. MovieMakingMitch delivers a crisp presentation of the pair standing around and rapping in some fresh Adidas fits across various street locations. With signature 808s that’ll “melt your ass off”, ‘RUN & GUN’ connects two rising emcees in hyped yet relaxed rap fashion.

ARAMINTA – SUGAR MOMMY SNACK
(An Almanac Production)

Araminta knows exactly what she wants with the new single and video ‘Sugar Mommy Snack’. Hailing from Naarm/Melbourne, Araminta’s music is characterised by a dreamy mix of pop and R&B/soul. The self-produced beat of ‘Sugar Mommy Snack’ takes on an ethereal vibe but remains grounded by its crisp drum beat. Through soft yet powerful vocals, Araminta laments about working hard for bad pay while seeing men work less for more. Directed by Maxine Zanoni, the richly coloured music video shows her working in a restaurant with her friends before beginning to terrorise their male customers. As her second release to date, there’s plenty to be excited for when it comes to Araminta.

MAMMOTH. & ERIK SPICE – BOTH MY HANDS FT. NIKODIMOS
(Park Avenue)

MAMMOTH. links with Eric Spice on the smooth and introspective joint ‘Both My Hands’. The celebrated Melbourne underground emcee teams with the sample-based producer for his first single of 2024. Thanks to Eric’s prolific inspirations which he describes as a mix of J Dilla and Italian film scores, MAMMOTH. encapsulates Melbourne culture into a classic New York sound. Park Avenue’s artsy cinematography shows the rapper rolling smokes and pouring drinks in his apartment before transitioning to a particle-based ‘dreamworld’ state. ‘Both My Hands’ is concrete evidence that the Picked Last rapper is one of 3k’s finest.

JAAL – TRY GET AWAY FT. OSCAR #WORLDPEACE
(Josh Barolo)

From his 2023 album YOU ONLY DIE ONCE, Jaal shares visuals to ‘Try Get Away’ featuring UK artist Oscar #Worldpeace. Over a laid-back, airy beat from OGK, Jaal raps about his desire for an escape from the pressures of life but wonders if he were to escape, where would he go? Oscar #Worldpeace comes in on the second verse with a vibe and flow that switches up the energy in the perfect way. With Josh Barolo handling the visuals, the video is wonderfully constructed with beautiful colours and interesting shot choices. With ‘Try Get Away’, Jaal and Oscar #Worldpeace have created a calm, relaxed vibe perfect for letting your mind drift, even if just for a few minutes.

INDIGOMERKABA & TOMMY GEARZ – MY BRO
(Sam Winderlich)

Indigomerkaba honours the loss of a dear friend on his latest single ‘My Bro’. The Adelaide wordsmith is constantly dropping spectacular work at hyperspeed, this time with his 9-track collaborative project with producer Tommy Gearz. Over a beat from the late producer, Indigo reminisces on the good times they shared and expresses regret for the unresolved, with his vulnerable vocal tone adding to the track’s immense weight of emotions. The video directed by Sam Winderlich and Indigo himself, shows him rapping next to a slideshow of images from Tommy’s life before a final piece of live show footage where the crowd chants “Rest In Peace Tommy Gearz”.

YNG MARTYR – MELANCHOLY DREAMS FT. TOKEN
(Fractrd)

The greatest rapper Call of Duty has ever produced, YNG Martyr, drops gritty single ‘Melancholy Dreams’ featuring Token. Following his recent anthem ‘SUPERBAD’, the new track is a musical handshake that just makes so much sense with Token’s ferocious tongue-twister flows. Perhaps even more impressive than this perfect team-up, are the accompanying visuals by Fractrd. One of Melbourne’s best graphic designers created an entirely digital, early 2000s video game world with both rappers fighting demons and werewolves. ‘Melancholy Dreams’ by Martyr is an all-round joy for rap fans, AUS or US, with crazy visuals sealing the deal if you weren’t already sold.
