MARSHALL STREET STUDIOS: 5 STANDOUT MOMENTS FROM 5 STELLAR YEARS

Image

Marshall Street Studios, Australia’s first 24hr membership music studio based in Melbourne’s North, celebrates its fifth birthday this month and the bricks-and-mortar home of AUD’$ is honouring the milestone with a MASSIVE free warehouse party featuring the likes of DJs Crystal Cartier, Junor, Sonic Vibes and Iamericinho, alongside live acts Ray Pelka and Zoo James.

The cultural community hub was founded in 2018 by Bennett ‘Marshall’ Ferguson, a former Obese Records DJ / producer with over a decade’s worth of varied experience in the music industry. Having toured domestically as a DJ multiple times, Bennett’s focus shifted towards developing and managing artists, hence the introduction of the Bundoora facility comprising 10 private studio rooms, a mezzanine entertainment floor, a photography studio, and rehearsal spaces.

The five-year anniversary also arrives alongside an announcement of plans to expand internationally, with New York marked as the first future set-up of MSS outside of Australia.

“After spending time in the States over the last few years building networks and relationships, now feels right to take our unique model to the biggest entertainment market in the world.”

– Bennett ‘Marshall’ Ferguson (2023)

Whether it’s international artists, elite athletes, or local students and youth funneled through the studio’s community partnerships, the creative hotspot has become a home to many. To celebrate MSS’ 5th birthday, we take a look back on five notable moments throughout the history that you may not be aware of:

ICONIC HP BOYZ / ONEFOUR STUDIO SESSION (2019)

On a quiet night in September 2019 two of the AU’s most buzzing acts linked for a legendary collab session. Word got out as to who was in the building and cars lined up around the block to catch a glimpse of their idols. Unfortunately, the track was somehow leaked and never officially released. It’s around online if you search hard enough.

LIL MOSEY COOKS UP AT MSS DURING TOUR (2019)

While down under off the back of his Billboard-charting debut album ‘Northsbest‘, the Seattle emcee recorded till early in the morning alongside resident MSS engineers, with tracks from the session eventually making it to his tour documentary.

QUEEN OF CONFIDENCE RECORDS HER BEST-SELLING AUDIOBOOK (2020)

A welcome change of pace for the studio, award-winning international confidence coach Erika Cramer recorded her best-selling book in audio format at the Bundoora facility. Upon release, the audiobook shot straight to the top of the Amazon charts.

BYAM CREATE THEIR DEBUT ALBUM (2020)

In between lockdowns, Pop/Punk outfit Between You And Me camped out at Marshall Street for a month recording their debut album ‘Armageddon‘. The album would go on to be named a Triple J Feature Album and spawn several tours both domestically and internationally.

COOLIO STOPS BY THE STUDIO (2022)

While in Australia for the massive ‘Made In The 90s’ tour alongside All-4-One, Mario Winans, and Q Parker (112), Coolio spent a day recording new material with a host of MSS residents and sharing stories of his extensive career. Sadly, we lost the ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ rapper only months later. But his name and signature will live on the wall forever.

The Marshall Street Studios 5th Birthday Party is already at capacity but a few last-minute tickets have just been made available, get in quickly and RSVP here for a night of entertainment with refreshments provided by Franklin Street and Burn City Rum.
